Thermal Compound Paste 🧪

 

Thermal compound, also known as thermal paste or thermal grease is a material used in computers to improve the thermal conductivity between the surfaces of the heat-generating components (such as the CPU or GPU) and the heat sink or cooler. Its primary purpose is to fill microscopic gaps and imperfections between the two surfaces, facilitating the efficient transfer of heat away from the component.

Here are some key points about thermal compound:

  1. Application: When assembling or reassembling a computer, a small amount of thermal compound is typically applied between the CPU or GPU and the heat sink. This ensures good contact and heat transfer.

  2. Material: Thermal compounds are usually made from a combination of conductive materials, such as silicon, silver, or ceramic particles, suspended in a silicone, hydrocarbon, or other base. The goal is to create a substance with good thermal conductivity.

  3. Replacing Old Paste: Over time, thermal compound can dry out or degrade. If you notice higher temperatures or are disassembling and reassembling your computer, it may be a good idea to replace the thermal paste.

  4. Application Techniques: There are different application techniques for thermal paste, such as the pea-sized dot method, spreading method, or an X-shaped application. The recommended method may vary depending on the specific paste and the shape of the component.

  5. Cleaning Old Paste: Before applying new thermal paste, it’s crucial to clean the old paste from both the CPU/GPU and the heat sink using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

It’s essential to follow the specific instructions provided by the thermal compound manufacturer, as application methods and recommendations can vary. Using too much or too little thermal paste can impact the effectiveness of heat transfer.

Common thermal paste brands include Arctic Silver, Noctua, and Thermal Grizzly, among others. When choosing thermal paste, consider factors like thermal conductivity, ease of application, and any specific requirements for your hardware.
